The other day I found this cute bike in the dumpster!!  I took it out, spent this morning removing rust and oiling it up and it actually works.  All it needs is a little tune up and then I can start cycling to work.  Fabulous!  AND, it’s a Huffy and has a little American flag on the front.  How perfect is that?

Tonight we both hurried from work, met on the tube and spent the evening at Wimbledon.  This was SUCH an English event:  Pims cocktails at the stands, all the players dressed in only white, real grass playing courts and the incredibly serious & well-outfitted line judges and ball retrievers.  After waiting in the world’s longest, yet most efficient queue, we were able to purchase ground passes for just £14 each and this allowed us to go into the unreserved seats (there were plenty!) of all but the biggest courts.  But the real question is….are we prepared to camp overnight in tents for tickets to the biggest games?

We’re slowly discovering ways to feel like we’ve traveled without spending lots of money on a trip!  Yesterday we spent the day doing a 10 mile walk through the Surrey Hills.  It’s a 50 minute train ride from London, costs about £15 each, and the walk begins and ends at the train station.  To top it off, yesterday was gorgeous with lots of sunshine and temps in the 70’s.  Some of the highlights were:

Virtually no cars, no people and definitely no pollution.
Picnic lunch (ploughmen’s) in a village green while watching cricket.
Using public footpaths.  These trails are all over England—if you buy property with a public footpath on it, you are responsible for the upkeep.  Yesterday’s path literally took us through some people’s backyards!
Walking through huge, open meadows—some full of sheep, others full of bunnies.

Of COURSE this is my winningest moment in slot machines.  Started with $5—ended with $25.  A good night at the Wilkes-Barre Mohegan Sun Casino.  By the way, I also got carded for drinks at the restaurant.  Yep—they weren’t sure that I was 21 years old.  Basically had to drag me kicking and screaming away from this wonderful place!

Home

Oh Texas, I can’t wait to see you!  Here are the things I miss the most about you:

  1. My family and friends, of course
  2. Riding in pickup trucks
  3. Swimming in rivers under big, shady trees
  4. Big sky, lots of stars and terrifying lightning storms
  5. Breakfast tacos and chicken fried steak
  6. “ya’ll”
  7. That melting skin feeling when you get into a hot car
  8. The shock of Barton Springs and relief on the warm, grassy hill
  9. Polite children and well-behaved dogs
  10. Flip flops for all occasions

One trip to the Cotswolds + two good friends in from Brooklyn = a fabulous bank holiday weekend!  Ashley and Russell arrived here Friday morning and we had so much fun.  We perused Portobello Road market on a very sunny Saturday and ended our evening at Gordon’s Wine Bar—an underground wine bar/cave that opened back in 1890 (when Rudyard Kipling lived upstairs).  On Sunday we woke up brutally early, picked up a rental car and I (now a full-fledged left-side-of-the-road driver) drove us to the Cotswolds.  We spent the afternoon walking around in the areas of Lower & Upper Slaughter (the names don’t do this quaint little area justice!), grabbed a quick lager in Stow-on-the-Wold and then settled into an amazing dinner at The Merrymouth Inn.  On Sunday we spent the day in Bath before returning home and sadly sent Russell & Ashley on their way early this morning to their next vacation destination.

Took a little after work excursion with some girls from work to the London Eye.  It has amazing views of London and the 30 minute space age type ferris wheel ride is the perfect amount of time to enjoy the views without getting too queasy!  Pricey, but a must-do for London.

This was taken yesterday in Victoria Park.  The weather was gorgeous over the weekend (back to clouds, cold and rain today though).  Everything is blooming—hooray for spring!

Apparently this is comfortable—he must be all tuckered out from leaving hair all over everything I just cleaned.
